I want to put my videos on my laptop, I have vista and a DV Camcorder, I bought a 4pin to 4pin fire wire, now all i need is the software. Is that right? and what free trials are best?

You should be able to use Windows Movie Maker – it’s free and it’s already installed. Once you’ve learned to use that you can make a more informed decision about what you want to spend your money on. I’d recommend Vegas Movie Studio.
